James McKowen, Ph.D.
I'm a Clinical Child Psychologist, Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School, and Clinical Director of the Addiction Outpatient Program. I specialize in helping parents navigate their child's substance use and mental health challenges through structured, evidence-based guidance, while also providing individual therapy for adolescents and young adults with addiction, anxiety, depression, and other stressors affecting youth.
I also offer climate-informed therapy for individuals experiencing distress related to the climate crisis—a growing mental health concern.
Outside of my therapy practice, I lead research on substance use, youth mental health, and the psychological impacts of climate change. I also work with organizations to promote climate-conscious sustainability using behavioral science and regularly collaborate on writing and speaking projects to raise awareness about the mental health effects of climate change.

Never forget that you are one of a kind. Never forget that if there weren’t any need for you in all your uniquness to be on this earth, you wouldn’t be here in the first place. And never forget, no matter how overwhelming life’s challenges and problems seem to be, that one person can make a difference in the world. In fact, it is always because of one person that all changes that matter in the world came about. So be that one person.
